August: Projects Moving Forward, an Ecosystem Growing Stronger

August is often synonymous with vacations and a slower pace. At the Agtech Zone, however, things were different. Even though the summer months gave many people the chance to take a well-deserved break, projects continued to move forward and initiatives continued to multiply.

Regional development, horticultural innovation, ecosystem engagement, the arrival of new members, and preparations for the future Innovation Center: August was marked by several developments that are helping to advance Quebec’s agtech ecosystem. Here are the highlights of the month.

A new groundbreaking ceremony marks a $10 million investment

Development of the Agtech Zone continued in August with another major milestone: the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction project located at 503 Amédée-Marsan Street in Repentigny.

The Riendeau Group has begun construction on a 36,657-square-foot industrial building, which will be entirely occupied by E. Lefebvre & Sons. The company will use the facility to expand its design and manufacturing operations for refrigerated boxes. The building is scheduled to open in the spring of 2027 and will create 16 to 20 jobs.

This new $10 million investment adds to the projects taking shape in the region and reflects the growing interest in the Agtech Zone as a business environment conducive to innovation, collaboration, and the development of companies in the agricultural and agri-food sectors.

With this project, investments in the Agtech Zone since its creation in 2020 have now surpassed the $74 million mark.

A New Protocol for Evaluating Strawberry Harvesting Technologies

Agricultural innovation must be evaluated under real-world conditions to demonstrate its relevance and potential for adoption. In August, the Horticultural Innovation Expertise Network (REIH) took another step forward with the publication of a new protocol for evaluating strawberry harvesting technologies.

This protocol is intended to provide a framework for evaluating strawberry harvesting technologies and to provide useful data for comparing their performance under conditions representative of the industry.

An initiative that helps bridge the gap between technology developers and real-world conditions and supports a more informed adoption of innovations by producers.

The Lanaudière Agtech Challenges are here!

August also marked the launch of the Lanaudière Agtech Challenges, an initiative aimed at connecting the region’s agricultural businesses with technology companies that can address their specific challenges.

By creating opportunities for demonstration and validation under real-world conditions, the Challenges help bridge the gap between on-the-ground needs and innovative solutions, while helping to accelerate their development and adoption.

Now that the application period has ended, the next step will be the announcement of the group of companies selected to tackle the identified challenges. Stay tuned!

Four new members join the Agtech Zone

The Agtech Zone ecosystem continues to grow with the addition of four new members with complementary areas of expertise.

Earth Alive developsbiological solutions based on living microorganisms to promote soil health and regeneration, particularly through biofertilizers that improve the availability of nutrients to plants.

AARP Group Kinova leveragesKinova's expertise in robotics, artificial intelligence-based vision, and intelligent control to develop automated harvesting solutions for the agricultural sector.

Eosium Digital Technologies helpscompanies implement technology solutions—particularly in cybersecurity, CRM, ERP, and business applications—by taking an approach tailored to their needs.

Victorin Robots developsrobotic solutions for vertical mushroom farms, using a Quebec-based platform designed to optimize automation and productivity in agricultural operations.

The arrival of these four companies helps diversify the expertise available within the Agtech Zone and expand opportunities for collaboration within the ecosystem.

Firme drh Joins the Future Innovation Center as an Expert-in-Residence

While work continues on the Center for Innovation in Agroscience and Agritechnology ahead of its opening in January 2027, the Agtech Zone is also working to build a network of experts who can support companies in their development.

In August, Firme drh announced that it would be joining the Innovation Center as an expert-in-residence. The company will offer its expertise in human resources and organizational development to support businesses in the ecosystem with challenges related to talent, growth, and organizational structure.

This new presence is part of the Agtech Zone’s commitment to developing a true hub of in-house experts capable of providing additional support to companies operating within the ecosystem.

The future Innovation Center will therefore not be solely a space dedicated to infrastructure and technology; it will also be a place where companies can access a wide range of expertise and resources to support their growth.

Results that demonstrate the impact of support

August also provided an opportunity to highlight the tangible results of the support offered by the Agtech Zone. We were able to look back and see the impact that the Agtech Zone’s support has had on Innovaplant and Alliance Solutions.

At Innovaplant, the journey from technological development to initial sales has yielded $162,500 in sales, $210,000 in new funding, and the preparation of commercial showcases at two growers’ sites. Click here to read the article about Innovaplant.

For Alliance Solutions, the results also reflect sustained growth: 16 new jobs created, 13 jobs retained, revenue of $1.75 million, and two acquisitions, one of which is based in Repentigny.Click here to read the article about Alliance Solutions

These case studies provide concrete examples of the value of an ecosystem that connects companies with producers, partners, and the resources needed to move an innovation from the development stage to the demonstration stage and then to the market.

A summer that continues to drive the ecosystem forward

August ultimately reflected the momentum driving the Agtech Zone: even during the summer, projects continue to move forward.

With new investments in the region, tools to speed up technology evaluation, a new networking initiative with agricultural businesses in Lanaudière, the arrival of new members, and preparations for the Innovation Center, several pieces are continuing to fall into place to strengthen the ecosystem.

As the new school year gets underway, a new season full of projects, meetings, and collaborations is already taking shape at Zone Agtech.
